Susan Klebold

The mother of shooter Dylan Klebold has finally opened up, in “O Magazine,” about her feelings on the event. Dylan Klebold (pictured on the right) and his friend Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School in CO on April 20, 1999, killing 12 students and a teacher, and injuring 21 others.

In Susan Klebold’s essay, entitled “I Will Never Know Why,” she writes that she had “no inkling” Dylan was depressed and suicidal. The essay was published on Tuesday in O, The Oprah Magazine.
The complete Susan Klebold essay can be found in the print version of O Magazine. Howver, excerpts are available on the website of the magazine.

In Susan Klebold’s essay, she notes that on the day of the massacre, the only signs she had of any upset on the part of Dylan Klebold was that he was in a rush. She thought it was because he’d had to get up early to take a friend to school. She didn’t know was the last time she would see him.
Significantly, Susan Klebold’s essay is being greeted with praise by parents of other students in the Columbine Massacre. Connie Michalik’s son Richard Castaldo was shot in the chest and back and was left paralyzed from the waist down. She said, said she was impressed that Klebold broke her silence by publishing an essay in O, The Oprah Magazine.
“I applaud her for the courage to talk about this,” Michalik said.
Susan Klebold’s essay in O Magazine is the most open and frank commentary given by any parent of the shooters since the event. However, those affected by the shooting understand why.
Krystal Miller (nee Woodman), one of the victims, understood their silence, saying: “Over the years I would’ve loved to hear something. But it sounds like she is still just reeling from it and processing it. So how is someone supposed to come out and give answers when they’re still trying to figure it out themselves?”
